Types of Teeth Whitening

Huffman Family Dentistry

Every innovation in teeth whitening is fairly new. Most dentists agree that whitening is fairly safe and easier to handle than root canals or braces. But this is only for people who know what to expect when they see a professional or buy an at-home kit. First, learn about the different types of teeth whitening options available.

Types of Teeth Whitening

In-Office

Professional teeth whitening takes place in a dentist’s office. The dentist performs a comprehensive examination and medical history of the patient’s oral health. Professional work can only be performed on perfectly healthy teeth and gums. An exam is also used to determine which chemicals are suitable for people with allergies or tooth sensitivity.

Most dentists use strong bleaching agents like carbamide or hydrogen peroxide that vary in percentage. They measure the results using tooth shade guides and schedule as many appointments as required. Some patients undergo months of weekly sessions while others have only a few.

Some dentists use light energy to whiten teeth. They use lasers to emit LED, plasma or halogen light that accelerates the bleaching process. However, there is an increased risk of damage to the gums and surrounding tissues.

At Home

There are various at-home options for people who don’t like driving all the way to the dentist’s office. Some clients take-home professional trays with the dentist’s instructions. Many of the chemicals are so strong that misusing them could result in tooth sensitivity or damage.

Take-home trays may include removable prosthetic devices that are fitted onto the person’s teeth. The client keeps the devices on during the day or overnight and waits as the bleaching chemicals kick into effect.

Gels, Rinses, and Tubes of toothpaste

Whitening gels and toothpaste are applied to the teeth two or three times a day. The teeth must be cleaned first of plaque and food debris for the best results. Most gels are not as strong and damaging as peroxide bleaching agents. Whitening rinses are then used and help to enhance the effects.

Pens and Strips

Whitening pens are designed like pens that are portable and easy to carry anywhere. Strips contain whitening gels that attach to the surface of teeth and remove stains. The strips are easily moldable to the shape of the teeth.

Part of good oral health is the clean appearance of the teeth. The result is the new and evolving procedure of teeth whitening. The side effects are minor compared to more invasive cosmetic procedures. There is a lot of maintenance that people are expected to keep up with.
